Introduction

MyUSE Web Application
Last reviewed: 11 May 2026
Next planned review: 11 May 2027

Web accessibility (a11y for short), is the inclusive practice of ensuring there are no barriers that prevent the interaction with, or access to, websites on the World Wide Web by people with disabilities.

MyUSE is committed to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all users of the MyUSE Web Application. This statement applies to the MyUSE user-facing application and the MyUSE administration dashboards, including tenant-specific content, branding, reporting views, and downloadable information where this is provided through the application.

Measures to support accessibility

MyUSE takes the following measures to ensure accessibility:

  • Accessibility is included as part of our mission statement and design policies.
  • We assign clear accessibility goals and responsibilities.
  • People with disabilities are included in our design personas.
  • Accessibility checks are included when new university tenants are added to the MyUSE multi-tenancy system.
  • Tenant-specific content, branding, colour choices, contact information, and localisation are reviewed so that the information shown in the App is relevant to the users of that tenant.

Features to support accessibility

The following features have been integrated to ensure accessibility. We aim to keep up to date with The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 and Google Lighthouse guidelines.

  • Focus management and keyboard interactions.
  • Visible focus states, including review against WCAG 2.2 focus visibility and focus not hidden requirements.
  • Videos with voiceovers or relevant audio content are assigned transcripts.
  • Non-decorative images are provided with alternative text.
  • Alternatives are provided where dragging movements or pointer gestures are not suitable.
  • Buttons, links, and interactive controls are reviewed for target size and keyboard access.
  • Forms are reviewed to reduce unnecessary repeated entry and support accessible authentication where relevant.
  • Stylistic decisions have been made with WCAG in mind. Features include:
    • Text fonts and sizing.
    • Button size and colour.
    • Universal iconography where possible.
    • Colour contrasts.
    • Line spacing.
  • Compatibility with popular screen readers and voice-to-text.
  • Audio control.
  • Semantic elements to identify page content without styling.

Accessibility Goals

We are committed to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity. Accessibility elements will be carefully revisited and reevaluated in future development to align with user needs and project priorities.

Our current accessibility goal is to maintain and improve alignment with WCAG 2.2 level AA across the MyUSE Web Application. This includes the user-facing App, tenant-specific localisation, and the admin dashboards that support each university tenant.

Conformance status

WCAG define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance:

  • Level A
  • Level AA
  • Level AAA

MyUSE Web Application is designed and maintained to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. Based on our current self-evaluation, MyUSE is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content or tenant-specific materials may not fully conform to the accessibility standard yet, or may require further tenant-specific checks.

MyUSE now supports multiple university tenants through a multi-tenancy system. Each tenant is supported separately. Admin dashboards show aggregated data related only to that tenant domain. Information is not shared between tenants, and tenants do not have access to other tenants' data. This does not affect users of the App, but each tenant can have relevant localisation so contact information and App content are relevant to that tenant.

Should you contact us using the MyUSE email address with a query or to report a problem with the MyUSE App, we will only use the contact details you provide to respond to your query. All personal data provided by you is processed by us on the basis of your consent and you are free to withdraw your consent at any time.

Compatibility with browsers and assistive technology

MyUSE Web Application is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:

  • Mobile platforms such as iOS and Android.
  • Well-known browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
  • Popular screen readers and voice-to-text tools used with supported browsers and mobile platforms.

MyUSE Web Application may not be fully compatible with browsers or assistive technology combinations that are no longer supported by their vendors, or with browsers more than three major versions old.

Technical specifications

The accessibility of MyUSE relies on the following technologies to work with the combination of web browser and any assistive technologies or plugins installed on your computer:

  • HTML
  • WAI-ARIA
  • CSS
  • JavaScript

These technologies are relied upon for conformance with the accessibility standards used.

Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility within MyUSE, there may be some limitations. These are listed below. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below:

  • Tenant-specific branding, colours, dashboard cards, links, alerts, and form states may require separate checks when a new university tenant is onboarded or when a tenant theme is changed.
  • Some older documents, downloadable materials, or third-party content may not fully meet WCAG 2.2 level AA.
  • Some reports or aggregated dashboard views may need ongoing checks to ensure charts, tables, and downloadable outputs remain accessible.
  • Some unsupported browser and assistive technology combinations may not work as expected.

If there is a specific component that appears inaccessible to you or your screen reading device, please contact MyUSE at support@myuse.ie or accessibility@myuse.ie.

Assessment approach

The MyUSE team assesses accessibility using the following approaches:

  • Self-evaluation.
  • Google Lighthouse accessibility testing.
  • Engaging with the UCC Access team to establish best practice.
  • Reviewing WCAG 2.2 level AA requirements, including newer areas such as focus visibility, focus not hidden, target size, dragging alternatives, consistent help, redundant entry, and accessible authentication.
  • Reviewing tenant-specific localisation, branding, and contact information during tenant onboarding and future tenant updates.
